A Glimpse of This Custom Home Wine Cellar Design
Custom Home Wine Cellar Designs: From Simple to Stylish
For a couple in Dallas who are both working doctors, a wine cabinet was the initial storage idea they wanted to have for their growing wine collection. They were avid travelers and found themselves enjoying wine tasting and joining wine enthusiast groups. At the same time, they were doing a major home remodeling project, so it was the perfect time to finally add a storage area for their wines!
Initially, the clients proposed having it in the kitchen. As we surveyed their home, we discovered their kitchen wasn’t a very practical and workable space since the designated area was not big enough.
Just beside the kitchen though was an empty, relatively large area that they were thinking of using as a formal dining or seating area. It had a room at the end which we learned was being used as normal storage. It was the ideal size for their wine collection, so we all agreed to place their custom home wine cellar there!
The clients originally envisioned a very simple wine cellar, but because of the space we were working with, we proposed to have a full-sized wine cellar complete with a wet bar and entertainment area which made them very excited!
The advantage of working with a wine cellar specialist who has a real passion in creating unique home wine cellars is that we always go above and beyond what our clients expect. We treat every project as if it was our own, so we journey with you in dreaming big!
Arriving At a Semi-Industrial Wine Cellar Design
The home’s interiors were mostly clad in industrial-style design complete with polished concrete floors and walls and a mixture of wooden and metal fixtures. We wanted to preserve that kind of aesthetic, so we also went with a semi-industrial theme for their custom home wine cellar design.
Difficulties in Building This Wine Cellar
One of the challenges we faced in the early stages of design and construction was that the ceiling, left wall, and right wall were solid concrete. That made it a bit difficult to figure out how to get a cooling unit in there. Additionally, there were no windows on the original storage room which made it impossible to see inside the cellar, an antithesis to the goal of making it an entertainment piece that’s fully visible from the kitchen and seating area.
To get through these issues, we decided to drill through the concrete wall to make way for the piping of a ductless split-system cooling unit and built a glass window to the right of the cellar that overlooks the seating area — all win-win design and construction solutions!
Getting This Cellar to Its Ideal Cooling Conditions
For wine cellars to be effective at preserving and keeping fresh, they must be refrigerated at an optimum temperature and humidity. The cooling approach can be different for every wine storage unit.
For this custom wine cellar, the side wall and part of the right wall were exterior walls, which means they are directly exposed to heat throughout the day. In addition, concrete doesn’t have as much R-value as you would think (despite it being solid concrete), so it was not very effective at keeping the temperature inside the storage consistently cool.
To address this, we added a few inches of wall and filled them with closed-cell foam insulation. This was the best solution since there was still a need to add a vapor barrier anyway. We added insulation to the back wall, left wall, right wall, ceiling, and the rest of the structure, then used a full-framed glass enclosure for visual purposes.
For the cooling system, we brought in the CellarPro RM2600 EC, a powerful, low maintenance, ductless split-system that features low-noise fan blades, a thermally protected motor, and high-performance staggered coils. We mounted the evaporator on the wall, ran the coils through walls, and placed the condensing unit outside the home. Now it’s ready to efficiently cool the entire room!
Contemporary Custom Wine Racks That Feature Both Metal and Wooden Storage
The aim of this project was a neat and cozy space that provided a semi-industrial feel with stone floors and walls. To produce this further, we added a custom-built wooden wine rack to the back wall.
We partnered with IronWine Cellars for the wooden part of the shelf and VintageView for the metal part of the shelf, to create a one-of-a-kind wine display cabinet! And yes, you read that right, this custom wine shelf is a wooden Mahogany shelf integrated with metal organizers to keep the bottles in place!
We went with a racking design that’s clean, crisp, straightforward, and practical.
The upper section of the shelf is made up of 9 rows of drawers that can slide out and store 110 standard-sized bottles. You don’t see them in the pictures but each of the drawers have metal organizers inside from VintageView.
The middle portion of the shelf consists of one display row that stores 10 bottles at a slight angle, and a small enclave where the owners can display special wines in a vertical position and decant wines safely and conveniently.
Finally, the lower section of the shelf is built with 9 open bins that can store more bottles and can accommodate wine crates too.
If you’re wondering where the wall-mounted cooling system was placed, you can find it on the uppermost portion of the shelf, behind the custom wooden grills that’s also built into the cabinet! That way, the cooling unit doesn’t visually disturb the clean design of the wine cellar. How awesome is that!
Overall, this custom home wine room can store a total of 606 wine bottles, and still with extra room for more.
Setting the Mood for This Custom Home Wine Cellar Design
While the structure and fixtures already give wine cellars some character and personality, see how the right lighting transforms every space into an even more incredible room! Wine cellar lighting can be curated to enhance the vibe and aesthetics of custom home wine cellar designs.
For this project, we added the following:
- 2 standard LED lights on the ceiling plus 1 puck light on the center
- LED ribbon lights on top of each one of the drawers and;
- LED ribbon lights on top of each display row
Our lighting system comes with a setting that allows the clients to control each group of lights, so they can turn on only what they need or curate a mood for every situation.
