wine cellar in Encinitas, California was one of those projects. From the beginning, the goal was not simply to create storage for a substantial collection. We wanted the cellar to become a highly visible architectural feature of the home while still providing the functionality expected from a properly designed climate-controlled wine room.
The defining element was the custom stainless steel and glass enclosure. Stainless steel doors are relatively rare in residential custom wine cellars, and executing them successfully can be considerably more demanding than working with conventional wood or standard metal-framed entrances. Our wine cellar experts had to consider how the doors, expansive glass panels, metallic wine racks, lighting, refrigeration, and surrounding finishes would work together as one complete composition.

Rows of wines extend along the walls in primarily horizontal orientations, supported by slender metal components that visually recede behind the collection. This gives the cellar substantial storage capacity without making the interior feel crowded or overly enclosed.
The open arrangement also lets the collection’s natural variety contribute to the design. Different bottle shapes, labels, colors, and wine types create their own texture across the walls. Rather than looking at a large mass of cabinetry, the viewer sees the collection first.
We also avoided treating every portion of the room as identical storage. By introducing open display areas between sections of wine racking, our wine cellar experts created visual pauses that keep the 387-bottle arrangement from becoming repetitive.
Contemporary Metal Racking Keeps the Wine in Focus
