Wine Cellar Design – Do It Yourself Or Call On An Expert?

One of the biggest industries booming in America today is that of the winery. Throughout the country, wineries are popping up all over the place, and much like craft beers, the country has really taken an interest in buying, trying and storing fine wines from all over the country and the world. Because of that many individuals have moved past storing their wines in the smaller countertop wine coolers, or dorm-sized wine refrigerators and have gone as far as dedicating areas of their homes as wine cellars. The installation of a wine cellar is something which will add value and appeal to any home, especially if the owner/buyer is a connoisseur of fine wines and the proper maintenance of them. There are a few things to keep in mind when determining the best wine cellar design and in the following paragraphs we will take a look at them.

First of all, when looking into wine cellar design, one needs to determine what space they may have available to devote to a wine cellar. In addition, it is important to remember the wine cellar is what one intends to make of it, so it could be anywhere from a 5’x5’ room to a 20’x20’ room…or larger. As long as one has the space and the willingness to dedicate it to a wine cellar, the sky is the limit.

There are also a number of features one will want to consider when working on their wine cellar design. Those include customized racking systems, lighting, flooring, materials to use, refrigeration & even inventory systems, as well as artwork which has become a staple of many wine cellars. Depending on how much one opts to spend will dictate how extravagant or straight forward their wine cellar design may be.

Custom racking systems and cooling may be the most difficult part of wine cellar design because there are so many different options available in today’s market. Determining how to refrigerate one’s wine cellar can prove a bit of a challenge as well. Not so much in that it can’t be done, but in that where your cellar is located in your home will determine what options you have for the type of cooling system you can use.

In addition, the overall look the owner is going for will help to lead you to the materials that you will choose. Only certain woods should be used in wine cellars. Ones that will hold up well in high humidity and not omit any odors. Redwood and mahogany are the most popular. Some wine cellar design options feature the use of darker woods, and granite, while others utilize more glass and iron work to display the bottles of wine. Either is fine, and totally up to the cellar’s owner, however; the varying levels of materials used will impact the overall cost for installing a wine cellar. It could also impact the ongoing cost for cooling. The more glass used, the more it will cost in the long run to keep the wine cellar at the optimal temperature.

Finally, lighting and flooring are the last options one should consider. LED lighting is always recommended wherever possible as it gives out little to no heat. Be sure any recessed ceiling lighting is an air lock system so as not to allow moisture to escape through the lighting fixture. Flooring can be hardwood, cork, tile, granite, or anything that will hold up well in high humidity. Never use carpet as it could mildew. Again, the sky is truly the limit when it comes to these two options as there are literally thousands of choices and combinations out there from which one can choose.

Wine Cellar Design

Now that the options and materials for wine cellar design have been discussed, it is time for the bigger question, and that is whether or not this is a task one should undertake themselves or hire out to an expert. The answer is not necessarily a simple one as there are a lot of variables to consider. For example, if someone were to proceed with installing a wine cellar themselves, do they have the skill set to accomplish this task and end up with a fantastic addition to their home? This includes tiling, framing, sheet-rocking, electrical, plumbing and refrigeration. (Split refrigeration systems require a licensed HVAC contractor to install.) And it is important to consider not only do they have those skill sets, but also can they do them well?

The other question that needs to be considered is do they have the time. In wine cellar design, to do it right takes time. This is not typically a project which one can knock out in a weekend. Even a smaller wine cellar, done right could take a considerable amount of time to complete. If someone has the skill set and the time to tackle a project like installing a wine cellar, there is some cost benefit to doing the project themselves.

That being said, with the number of contractors in the market today featuring wine cellar design as a staple of their business, whereas it may cost a little more out of pocket, going with someone experienced in that specialty may be well worth the investment. Even if the homeowner has the time and skill set to do it, these experts have built hundreds, if not thousands of wine cellars, and because of that, may be able to do the job much more efficiently in the process.

Ultimately, the addition of a wine cellar adds ambiance to any home. When looking to bring that in to one’s home, it may be best to call an expert. The peace of mind alone will be well worth the investment.
